Former North Hempstead Supervisor Newburger Has Street Named for Her in Town Hall Ceremony

Manhasset, NY—
In her long, established career in public service, May Newburger gained a reputation of nearly always getting her way.

Recently, on the evening of July 19, the former Town of North Hempstead Supervisor who mentored many of the present crop of local politicians, including Supervisor Jon Kaiman, truly got her own way.

In a Town Hall ceremony paying tribute to her distinguished career, Fairway Drive, the street leading to Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington, was officially renamed May Newburger Way.

A distinguished cast of political officials were in attendance at the standing-room only tribute to Newburger whose ten years in office as North Hempstead Supervisor ended in 2003.

“It is heartwarming to see so many of the people here tonight who worked with May over the years in various capacities,” Supervisor Kaiman said. “When she became Supervisor, times were tough and municipalities were struggling financially. When the question was raised at election time about ‘who do you trust?’ the answer was always unequivocally May.”

During her decades-long career, Newburger served in a number of roles. She served eight years as a member of the state Assembly, and worked on water resource needs for Long Island and landfills legislation. And after former County Executive Tom Suozzi created the Nassau County Planning Federation, he appointed Newburger director.

In addition to Suozzi, Supervisor Kaiman and members of the Town Board and other North Hempstead elected officials, the cadre of well-wishers on hand to honor Newburger included, state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, NYS Senator Jack Martins, former NYS state Legislator Michael Balboni, representatives from Congressman Gary Ackerman, state Assemblyman Charles Lavine, and Nassau County Legislators Wayne Wink, and Judi Bosworth.

Referring to Newburger as “truly a trailblazer,” DiNapoli said it was appropriate that the entrance to Harbor Links golf course will bear Newburger’s name. DiNapoli went on to say, however, that the roadway sign which had been created for the ceremony naming the street May Newburger Drive should be changed to May Newburger Way because “she always got her way.”

The Board later passed a resolution to make the change.

It was under Newburger’s administration that the former sand mining site off West Shore road, which was slated for the construction of an incinerator, now bears one of the region’s premier golf courses.
