North Hempstead Highway Crews Prepared to Work ‘Till Dawn to Make Roads Passable
Supervisor Declares Snow Emergency

North Hempstead, NY—As the second “Blizzard of 2010”  shuts down schools and workplaces and causing airlines and mass transit carriers to put the brakes on service, Supervisor Jon Kaiman declared that the Town of North Hempstead will be operating under snow emergency conditions.  Residents may not leave cars parked on any street previously declared as snow emergency route.  The Town's Highway Department will continue to clear roadways to make sure the roads are passable for this evening’s and tomorrow morning’s rush hour commute.

“We ask residents to park in their driveways where possible to allow our Highway Department crews to effectively remove snow and ice off the roadways,” said Supervisor Kaiman.  “If there are areas that are impassable, we urge residents to call 311 or (516) 869 6311, and report the area to a service representative.”

As many as 100 trucks have been traversing the Town’s 600-plus lane miles of highways, plowing and salting and spreading sand where the surfaces have iced. The plan is to keep repeating the process with a crew of more than a 120 workers until the storm ceases. Before it is all over, North Hempstead will have spread more than 3,000 tons of salt and tens of tons of sand in an effort to make the roads safe for motorists.
