NORTH HEMPSTEAD’S WE CARE ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM VISITS SHELTER ROCK SCHOOL

(Manhasset, NY – March 12, 2009) The Town of North Hempstead annually presents an environmental student awareness workshop, entitled WE CARE, to local elementary school students. On Tuesday, March 10, 2009, Shelter Rock Elementary School students welcomed Town Councilwoman Maria-Christina Poons and Town Clerk Leslie Gross, to their school for this program.

Councilwoman Poons remarked, “Litter and water waste are huge environmental problems.    Therefore, it is imperative that all of us become aware of the future problems relating to garbage and water waste themselves. The Town’s WE CARE program addresses these environmental issues for school children. It is highly important that students learn about the earth’s fragile environment and ecology at an early age in elementary school.”

Shelter Rock’s students examined various alternative approaches to environmental preservation.  In a hands-on classroom, they studied the water cycle, water utilization, the use of compost as an alternative fertilizer, and also learned about the dangers of chemical seepage into aquifers. The students were taught about the various plants and animals that exist locally and how they become extinct, too.

Supervisor Jon Kaiman commented afterwards that “the Town has been pursuing a green policy from purchasing hybrid vehicles, including buses, to the establishment of the Environmental Legacy Fund. Partnering with local school districts, we have established a comprehensive recycling programs in schools, too.  The WE CARE program is intended to make students aware of our environment’s frailties at an early age.”

The Town’s next WE CARE program will be held at Munsey Park School on April 8, 2009.
