Record-breaking Crowd Salute Veterans and Enjoy Fireworks at North Hempstead’s 2009 Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks Event

Port Washington, NY—Supervisor Jon Kaiman announced that North Hempstead’s 2009 Memorial Day fireworks attracted a record crowd, bringing together thousands of Long Island residents for a remembrance ceremony to honor the members of our Armed Forces.

“What wonderful community tribute to our troops and commemoration to the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation,” said Supervisor Kaiman.  “I thank all the families of our armed forces for living with the brave sacrifice of their loved ones.”

The 2009 Memorial Day Fireworks held at North Hempstead Beach Park, Saturday May 23, featured a stirring rendition of the national anthem performed by Nikki Blonsky of Hairspray, the Pledge of Allegiance recited by Lance Corporal Michael Dolan a recently returning veteran from Iraq, three cover bands – The Glasses Houses, The Long Run, and the Beginnings- and a spectacular fireworks display from the Bay Fireworks Company.

North Hempstead’s Parks and Recreation Department moved the stage to the middle of North Hempstead Beach Park for the 2009 fireworks show, allowing the thousands of onlookers to spread out throughout the thirty-four acre beach and park.

“I thank all of those who helped make this event such a great success, including the North Hempstead’s Parks and Recreation Department, North Hempstead’s Harbor Safety, the Nassau County Police and KJOY radio,” said Councilman Angelo Ferrara.

The Town of North Hempstead would also like to thank Nassau County Police Department Pipe Band and Color Guard, the US Marine Corps Color Guard, Port Washington Police Department, and the volunteer Fire Departments throughout the Town of North Hempstead Guard.
