Supervisor Bosworth and Town Board Moving Board Meetings Temporarily While Elevator is Repaired

Also set public hearing for Wednesday dog days at Clark Botanic Garden


North Hempstead, NY –At the most recent Town Board meeting on March 20, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board approved moving upcoming Town Board meetings scheduled to take place in May, June and July to an alternate location at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park temporarily, while the elevator at Town Hall in Manhasset is out of service due to repairs.  The Town Board also voted to cancel the June 26 Town Board meeting. 

 

Also approved at the meeting:

  • Dogs at Clark Botanic Garden: A proposed rule that will allow Clark Botanic Garden to open its doors to dogs every Wednesday was scheduled for a hearing and vote on April 17.  Currently, dogs were not permitted into the garden. If approved, all dogs visiting the garden must be on leashes and accompanied by a handler at all times.  Clark Garden will provide waste bags for dogs, visitors with dogs are expected to clean up after their dogs. 
  •  Military Discounts: The Town Board voted to extend veterans discounts at Town facilities, including beaches and parks, to active member of the military.  These discounts include parking fees at beaches as well as pool memberships.
  • Abandoned vehicles: The Town Board scheduled a public hearing for April 17 to discuss amending the Town Code to allow abandoned vehicles to be auctioned off on the internet.  Currently, the Town Code allows for the Highway Department to auction abandoned vehicles. However, the new law will explicitly allow these auctions to take place online.  The hearing date for this local law is April 17.  
  • Block grant: The Town Board approved the Community Development Agency’s (CDA) request to apply for the 44th program year of the Community Development Block Grant funds.  In the past the CDA has received $740,000 from this grant program.  If received, the funding will assist the Town’s ongoing Workforce Housing Program.  This program is a joint partnership between the Town and the CDA along with the Long Island Housing Partnership, the Nassau County Office of Community Development, the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation and developer Cornerstone Properties of New York.
  •  “Meet Me at the Park”: The Town also approved a request to apply for a National Recreation and Park Association grant.  If awarded, the grant will provide over $30,000 for new playground equipment at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury.
  •  Bid awarded for New Cassel Sidewalk repair-The Board awarded Roadwork Ahead a contract to reconstruct the Grand Boulevard sidewalk in New Cassel.
  • The Town Board also authorized agreements with:
  • East End Volleyball to conduct a volleyball league at North Hempstead Beach Park for 13 weeks this summer for ages 10 and up

     

  • an agreement with the Long Island Nets to conduct a basketball camp and the team practices at Yes We Can Community Center. The camp runs April 2-6 and April 22 and 23. The cost is $350

     

  • an agreement with Mad Science of Long Island for summer science programs at various town parks

     

  • an agreement with The Gold Coast Arts Center to sponsor the 2018 Gold Coast International Film Festival.
