Town of North Hempstead Appoints New Commissioner of Public Safety

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced this week that the Town of North Hempstead has appointed Shawn Brown the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.
Brown, has worked for the Town of North Hempstead for 20 years. He first joined the Department of Public Safety in 1999. Shawn has been serving in the role of Acting Public Safety Commissioner since February 2016.

“We are very excited to have Shawn serve as our Commissioner of Public Safety. He brings along his institutional knowledge about the Town, along with his experiences serving as the Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner of Public Safety.” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “His attention to detail and strong work ethic will serve him well in this position.”

The Department of Public Safety oversees seven divisions which include the Town’s Animal Shelter, Code Enforcement, Harbor Patrol, Emergency Management, Parking Enforcement and the Port Washington Parking District. The Department of Public Safety is also responsible for enforcing the Town’s ordinances and regulations in the unincorporated villages.

As Deputy Commissioner Shawn played a significant role in improving the Public Safety’s productivity, including mandating all Code Inspectors to wear a uniform, quantifying pro-active service requests, expanding Code Enforcement’s hours of operation to seven days a week as well as integrating the Department more closely with the 311 Call Center. In 2012 the International Code Council recognized Shawn’s work and rewarded him as a Match Scholarship recipient at their Annual Meeting in Portland Oregon.

Shawn has been a “Big Brother” with Big Brother Big Sisters, Past President of the New York Pitt Club and last year a U10 boys’ soccer coach for the Syosset Soccer Club.

He also founded Samba 360, a 501 (C) 3 not for profit charity that distributes new and gently used sports equipment to disadvantaged children, as well as provide soccer and chess programs to economically distressed communities.
