Town Reminds Commercial Businesses of New Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board would like to remind commercial business owners that they now must have carbon monoxide alarms in all commercials buildings by June 27, 2016.

The Department of State has adopted a rule that amends the Uniform Code and requires carbon monoxide alarms in all commercial buildings. Under New York State law, all commercial buildings must be equipped and in compliance by June 27.

Carbon monoxide poses a great danger because it is odorless and invisible. Indications of possible carbon monoxide poisoning include chronic headaches, nausea and shortness of breath. These signs can often be confused with food poisoning or the flu. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur when appliances that burn, such as furnaces, boilers and water heaters, are used improperly.

Residents are also reminded about the importance of having carbon monoxide detectors in homes. In order to encourage all residents to have carbon monoxide detectors in homes, the Town will be offering a coupon for 30% and free shipping on all Kiddie carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
For the coupon, please visit the Town’s Building Department at 176 Plandome Road in Manhasset.

For more information on the New York State law please visit the New York State Division of Code Enforcement and Administration at www.DOS.NY.GOV/DCEA/Noticadopt.html. For more information on receiving a discounted detector, please call 311 or (516)869-6311.
