Town Unveils New OpenGov Software to Increase Accountability
Transparency in Government is Top Priority for Administration

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board today launched a state-of-the-art financial analysis program that enables the general public to access information about North Hempstead budget, finances and expenditures. The software, a product of the California-based company OpenGov, allows for interactive access to North Hempstead’s budget in a user-friendly format. North Hempstead is the only Town on Long Island that uses the OpenGov.com program.

“Since day one of this administration we have worked tirelessly to increase transparency in Town government,” said Supervisor Bosworth about the introduction of the new system. “This new software will allow our taxpayers to track every dollar of the Town budget and actually see where their money is going.”

Additionally, over the past 17 months, the Town has taken several other steps toward a more open and transparent government, including moving public comment to the start of Town Board meetings, making the meetings viewable online, including meeting agendas with back-up information on the Town website, and making the bid process more transparent by publishing which companies bid on Town contracts.

Among the array of features offered by the OpenGov software is a property tax analysis tool, with which residents can see how much their property taxes account for the Town budget, and also compares the amount that their neighbors pay in property taxes. Another tool allows users to analyze the funding for particular programs in various departments such as Parks, Community Services, or Public Safety. Every transaction is accounted for and available to view on the website.

Users will not be required to subscribe to any special website or software. The OpenGov tools will be available on the Town of North Hempstead’s website at www.northhempsteadny.gov via an icon on the homepage.
