North Hempstead Fires up ‘Snow Melter’ to Free Space in Parking Lots

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced today that the Town has fired up a snow melting machine to liquefy some of the huge piles of snow, resulting from the past several snow storms. These snow mounds that accumulate in the Town’s parking lots can take away valuable space.

“In the past we had to depend solely on the sun to melt snow, but this machine will help lighten our load,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “The snow melter will enable us to clear commuter parking lots and take care of some of the huge piles of snow around our Town.”

The snow melter has been leased by the Town’s Highway Department for a two-month time period. It uses hot water to melt 100 tons of snow an hour, releasing the excess water into a storm drain. Any sticks, rocks or other debris is sifted out and collected at the bottom of the melter. Snow is dumped into the melter by a payloader.

According to Bosworth, the snow melter can be transported to any area around Town where it is most needed. After the Highway Department team starts removing snow piles from commuter parking lots, they will then proceed to an industrial lot in Westbury and other areas of the Town where snow accumulation is a problem.

“The snow melter also saves time and enhances employee productivity, because highway crews do not have to move large amounts of snow to locations for storage,” Supervisor Bosworth added.
