Supervisor Bosworth Reminds Residents to Remain Cautious of Scams Targeting Seniors
Recent incidents in the Town highlight need for seniors to be cautious

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the North Hempstead Town Board, and the Town’s aging-in-place program Project Independence remind residents to be aware of scammers who have been targeting senior citizens in phone and email scams. Recently, there has been an increase in scenarios involving requests for money as well as mortgage and deed proposals.

“The Town was informed recently that there has been a large increase in the number of residents that who have been targeted in scams focusing on requests for money. We would like to remind everyone to remain cautious when speaking and dealing with strangers who ask for money,” said Supervisor Bosworth. Some typical scams are:

  • Request money through a plea for assistance, this is usually done on behalf of a family member or grandchild.
  • Request for bail money (bail money is almost always paid direct to the court or correctional facility)
  • An attorney representing friends or family
  • Government agencies and utility companies
  • Contest and prize agencies
  • Kidnapped family members
Mortgage and Deed
  • Offers for “loan modifications” and lower interest rates
  • Charges in advance for mortgage modification services
