Councilman Pollack Proposes Off-Street Parking Legislation

Proposal would require annual payment for off-street parking variance

MANHASSET, NY (July 1, 2005)—Councilman Fred L. Pollack announced today that a public hearing will be held July 19th for his recent proposal to work with local businesses to protect public land. This amendment to the Town Code would include a modest annual fee for a variance from the Town’s off-street parking requirements. Revenues generated by this measure would go directly to the Town’s Environmental Trust Fund. This fund was established in 1996 as a public-private partnership to protect open space.

“When a variance is granted allowing a business to open with fewer off-street parking spaces than required by our Code, it inevitably results in their customers parking on public streets and lots,” said Councilman Pollack. “Because the principal affect is on the environment, requiring these businesses to pay a fee to the Town’s Environmental Trust Fund is an ideal way to balance the impact.”

The proposed annual fee is $100.00 for each parking space for which a variance is granted.

This public hearing will be held at the Town of North Hempstead’s Board meeting on July 19, 2005. For more information, call Councilman Pollack at 516.869.7711 or e-mail him at pollackf@northhempsteadny.gov.
