New Cassel, NY– Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilman Robert Troiano announced this week that over 40 summonses were issued by the Nassau County Police Department’s Third Precinct as part of an operation to crack down on illegal truck traffic through New Cassel’s residential neighborhoods. The operation, which was implemented in conjunction with the Town’s Department of Public Safety, took place the evening of July 1st, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, and consisted of a checkpoint at the intersection of Urban Avenue and Railroad Avenue.

“Truck traffic through New Cassel is not just a nuisance, it’s a hazard,” Councilman Troiano said.“Trucks speed down residential streets all hours of the day and night, disrupting residents sleeping and waking hours, creating unsafe driving conditions, polluting the environment and destroying our roads.”

Residents saw the look of shock on the face of the truckers as they approached the check point and were pulled over by the police. One resident, Al Robinson, whose parked car was damaged by a speeding truck said, “These drivers have no respect for us. They drive by and laugh. Now the tables are turned. This will teach them.”

In total 44 summonses were issued:34 for disobeying a “No Commercial Traffic” sign, 9 citing an unlicensed operator, and 1 was issued to a driver for not wearing his seatbelt.

“The number of violations issued over just a two hour period shows that the problem has reached epidemic proportions,” Troiano added. “I am grateful for the cooperation we received from the police and I am hopeful that the ticketed truckers spread the message to other truckers.”

“The Third Precinct has an established relationship with the Town of North Hempstead which facilitates a coordinated response to community complaints,” added Inspector Lorraine Hannon, Commanding Officer of the Third Precinct.“The Police Department will continue to make every effort to be responsive to quality of life and traffic concerns precinct-wide.”
