Town Receives Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting

North Hempstead, NY
–Continuing its tradition of following strong financial practices, The Town of North Hempstead was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) in the 2011 budget year.

Jane Cunneen, Treasurer of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada, was on hand at the Town’s Board Meeting on September 10th to present the award to Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman.

“I take great pride in know that the Town has been recognized for the second consecutive year,” said Supervisor Kaiman. “This Certificate of Achievement is a prestigious national award that certifies that we have met the high standards of preparation in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.”

According to the GFOA, the award recognizes that the Town has achieved the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

“We hope that this award presented to the Town of North Hempstead will serve as an example and encourages other municipalities to strive for the same high standards in their own financial reporting,” said Cunneen.

The CAFR program encourages and assists government agencies to prepare financial reports of the highest quality for the benefit of citizens and other parties with a vial interest in government’s finances.

The Town was judged by an impartial panel and met the standards set forth by the Government Financial Officers Association in communicating financial information in a clear and transparent manner. In earning this award, it signifies that the Town substantially conformed to the program’s extensive criteria and exceeds the minimal requirement of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GOFA) is a non-profit professional association that serves approximately 17,500 government finance professional.
