Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Town Officials Invite Residents to Celebrate Black History Month

North Hempstead, NY – Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Councilwoman Viviana Russell and the North Hempstead Town Board will host their Annual Black History month celebration on February 27 at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury. This year’s theme will be “The Words of Maya Angelou” and will feature, in part, readings of Angelou’s most famous works.

Intermingled with the readings will be musical performances from a number of area schools, including: Carle Place High School, Carle Place Middle School, Westbury High School, Drexel Avenue School, Park Avenue School, and Powells Lane School. Selections of African-American dance and drumming will also be highlighted.

“We are excited to invite our residents to celebrate the diversity and contributions of African-American history makers with us,” Bosworth said. “I thank our local school districts and talented young students for participating and bringing African-American history and culture to life.”

New awards will be given out this year, honoring residents who have given back to the community and have displayed remarkable generosity in their care and service of others. One honoree will be selected from each of the 6 council districts.

“The innovative contributions of African-Americans have laid the foundation for many facets our country. The addition of these awards allows all of us to reflect on these great contributions by honoring leaders of our community and illustrating how appreciative we are for all they have done for us,” said Councilwoman Russell, who became the first African-American female Town Board member when she was first elected in 2009.

The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Immediately prior to the event there will be light refreshments beginning at 5:30 p.m. Please call 311 for more information.
