Town Announces $1.4M in Sandy Aid for Manorhaven Beach Park
FEMA funding provided with help of Senators Schumer & Gillibrand

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced this week that courtesy of U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, the Town will be receiving $1.4 million in federal funding to make repairs at one of the Town’s prized recreational facilities, Manorhaven Beach Park. The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) will be providing the award in the amount of $1.2 million with an additional $200,000 coming through NYS from the federal HUD Community Development Block Grant funds.

Various portions of the park were damaged by wind during Superstorm Sandy including the tennis court, picnic pavilions, women’s restrooms, main building and ornamental wooden decking in the surrounding park area. Additionally, sections of dock area were broken as well as a concrete boat ramp and seawall, and kayak stands, which are all slated to be replaced with this funding.

“This FEMA grant will help us restore this vital recreational facility at Manorhaven Beach Park,” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “I am very appreciative of the work done by our federal representatives, Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who were able to secure these funds through FEMA. The grant will work in conjunction with two existing state grants that we received last year to rebuild the park’s boat ramp and the neighboring property along North Sheets Creek, bringing a total of $2 million in assistance to the park.”

Manorhaven Beach Park boasts among other features a 25,000 square foot main pool area with competition and lap swim area, general swim sections, zero depth entry for children and beginners, as well as two giant water slides and state of the art play features and a separate kiddie pool area. The park also provides full outdoor recreation activities, such as basketball, newly re-surfaced tennis courts, handball, horseshoe pits, and racquetball and bocci courts.

Some of this work has already been completed including the roof on the main building, ornamental wooden deck and bocce court, which the Town will be reimbursed for. Construction on the remainder of these projects is currently in the planning stages.
