Supervisor Bosworth Honors Heroes from Port Washington Boat Fire

North Hempstead, NY –North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board welcomed nine Town Bay Constables and local marina staff members to Town Hall on September 9th to honor them for their heroic actions during the boat fire at the Manhasset Bay Marina on August 20th.

Supervisor Bosworth opened the ceremony by holding a moment of silence for the boat’s owner Bob Hogan, a former Mayor and Trustee of Plandome Manor that was killed in the fire. Hogan was also a retired NYPD captain.

Town Bay Constables Mal Nathan (Chief Bay Constable), Max Fleming, Phil Purcell, and Jose Mauricio Soriano and Kevin Nicoll of Manhasset Bay Marina were all instrumental in ensuring that the boat passenger was saved. They also quickly made sure that the fiery boat was towed away from the fuel docks and other boats to avoid further destruction.

Bay Constables Victor Fuentes and Steve Somma, along with Toms Point Marina employee Thomas Lampus, were on the scene later to assist local fire departments, including the FDNY’s bravest company who ultimately extinguished the fire. All employees were presented with certificates of recognition from the Town.

“All of you put yourself in grave danger that day in order to save lives and protect everyone from further harm,” Supervisor Bosworth said as she presented the certificates. “You should all be commended for your selfless actions and going above and beyond the call of duty.”

Also on hand was a large contingent from the Mineola Fire Department to support fellow member Kevin Nicoll.
