Town Board Round Up
Supervisor Proposes Several Amendments to Double-Pole Law; Lower Speed Limit to Be Considered for Roslyn Road
Town approves New Cassel street to be designated “Marvin Leon Johnson Sr. Way”

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and members of the Town Board held a second public hearing on August 12 on proposed legislation that would require public utility companies to remove any “decommissioned” utility poles, commonly known as “double-poles” from Town roadways. Several amendments to the proposed law were suggested, including extending the time limit for removal from 15 days to 30 days and allowing extra time for the utility companies to remove double-poles if an “Act of God” occurs. The hearing remains open until the September 9 meeting. An amendment requiring the utility company to place a warning sign on any newly installed pole that has been treated with Pentachlorophenol (Penta), a known carcinogen, will be considered as a separate resolution next month.

A public hearing was also held to consider a zoning change application for a multiple residence at 1 West Street in Glenwood landing, but the application failed to gain approval by the board.

  • A resolution was approved authorizing an agreement with Genuine Auto Parts Company (NAPA) to take over the inventory of the Town’s fleet parts room. The agreement is projected to produce $24,000 a year in savings for the Town due to the fact that the Town would not have to keep inventory on hand for its vehicle fleet.
  • A resolution was approved authorizing an inter-municipal agreement with the Village of Great Neck Plaza to restore and preserve the historic Allen Family Burial Ground where members of the historic Allen family were buried on the property between the years 1810 and 1861.
  • A resolution was approved authorizing an inter-municipal agreement with the Great Neck Park District for repairs to the Stepping Stones Lighthouse.

Hearing dates for September 9 were set for the following items:
  • To consider the rescission and adoption of an ordinance affecting the varying speed limits along Roslyn Road in Roslyn. The road, which passes through various jurisdictions, currently has a varying speed limit ranging from 30 to 35 to 40 m.p.h. The purpose of this hearing would be to consider the rescission of the 40 m.p.h. speed limit on the Town of North Hempstead portion, which runs east side of Roslyn Road from the north curb line of I.U. Willets Road, north to the Village of East Hills/Town of North Hempstead line and the west side of Roslyn Road from the Long Island Expressway North Service Road, south to the curb line of I.U. Willets Road.
  • A resolution to consider an amendment to Town code that would remove the Department of Highways from under the umbrella of the Department of Public Works.
The next Town Board meeting is scheduled for September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
